MP. Your current fuel consumption is as good as it gets. Don't fret over mpg, see how many miles you can eek out of a tankful. On my latest tankful of Total Excellium I should see well over 600 miles. Mostly though on my 2.0 tdci the average is around 40 mpg. If I keep below 120 kms on the motorway, I can get near 50 mpg. My Mk4 Mondeo, 2.0TDCI 60 Plate developed a fault whereby at low speed 20 mph approx (stupid speed limits on base) and approx 1500RPM the car seemed to hunt and the revs hunt/bounce at around that value. Read a few forum posts etc and decided to clean the inlet manifold on the front of the engine
The same think happened to my MK3 Mondeo with the TDCI engine. I thought it is only me and my ear, but apparently I am not the only one. I do not think however this is due to the DPF. I rather think that this is due to the diesel fuel quality or even due to the bad functioning of the injectors in some cases. _____

I have only ever used premium diesel since owning the car (bar one tank of regular diesel) and my economy has never really been better than 40-ish on average. Be aware you also get dramitc drops from there on i.e travell a mile and you loose est. 3 miles fuel sometime more and thats taking it sready. My S Max is over six months old now and the car has had its first service. The fuel economy is no better, in fact it is slightly worse, than my 2009 Mondeo estate with the same engine.
